About Jane
I am the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids, produced by Vermont Public. Launched in 2016, But Why is one of the top kids’ podcasts in the US and features children from around the world who send in their questions to be answered by knowledgeable guests. We celebrate lifelong curiosity and believe every child deserves to have their curiosity rewarded and their questions answered with respect, thoroughness and joy. We’ve received close to 30,000 questions since we started, and I’m always impressed and inspired by what kids want to know.
For 14 years, both before and during my time at But Why, I hosted Vermont Public’s daily public affairs show, Vermont Edition. I came to Vermont Public in 2007 to expand Vermont Edition from a weekly pilot into the station’s flagship daily newsmagazine.
Over the years, I have been grateful to receive many regional and national accolades, including two national Murrow Awards for innovation as well as GRACIE awards, Signal Awards and two regional Emmy nominations.
I cut my teeth in journalism after college, working first for NPR in Washington as an associate producer on Radio Expeditions, a co-production of NPR and the National Geographic Society, and on Talk of the Nation and Weekend Edition Saturday. And I later moved to Los Angeles to be the director for APM’s Marketplace.
I studied anthropology in college, at Harvard University, where I developed a passion for understanding why humans behave the way we do. That curiosity about human behavior has driven most of my work in journalism and colors the way I look at the world today. I’ve also worked as a travel writer and editor and spend most of my free time looking at flora and fauna in the woods of Vermont while I’m out running with my dog.
